Parental leave by country / Slovakia
Maternity, paternity and parental leave in Slovakia
How long each parent can be away, who pays and how much, the notice rules and the job protection — in plain English, whether you run a team in Slovakia or work on one.
Slovak maternity benefit runs 34 weeks at 75% of the daily assessment base, extended to 37 weeks for a single mother and 43 for a mother of twins or more. Fathers have a separate two weeks of otcovské within the first six weeks after the birth, also at 75%. Parental leave then runs to the child's third birthday on a flat rodičovský príspevok of €500.10 a month where the parent drew materské, or €364.80 where they did not.

How it works
Materské is a sickness-insurance benefit rather than employer pay: Sociálna poisťovňa pays 75% of the daily assessment base for 34 weeks from the date entitlement arises, 37 weeks for a mother who does not share a household with the child's father, and 43 weeks for a mother who has given birth to two or more children and cares for at least two. Because the daily assessment base is capped — at €100.2083 for 2026 — the benefit is capped with it, at about €75.16 a day. Fathers have their own otcovské of two weeks, taken within six weeks of the birth and payable even while the mother is drawing materské or the parental allowance for the same child. After the benefit period, rodičovská dovolenka under the Labour Code runs to the child's third birthday, supported by the rodičovský príspevok under Act 571/2009 — a flat monthly amount that does not vary with earnings, set at €500.10 for a parent who previously drew materské for the child and €364.80 for a parent who did not, and adjusted every 1 January in line with the subsistence minimum.
Worth knowing: The two-tier parental allowance is the point worth noticing: drawing materské first raises the later flat payment by roughly €135 a month for up to three years, so the sequence of benefits matters more to household income than the headline rate. Both tiers are re-set every 1 January against the subsistence minimum.
If you run a team in Slovakia
None of this is paid by you — materské and otcovské come from Sociálna poisťovňa and the parental allowance from the labour ministry — but the job protection is long: parental leave runs to the child's third birthday, or six for a child with a long-term health condition. Fathers' two weeks of otcovské sit inside the first six weeks after the birth and can overlap the mother's leave, so expect both parents absent in that window.
If you work in Slovakia
Maternity benefit is 34 weeks at 75% of your daily assessment base — 37 if you are a single mother and 43 with twins or more — and it is capped, so high earners lose proportionately more. Fathers should claim otcovské for two weeks in the first six weeks after the birth; it is paid even if the mother is drawing her own benefit. After that the parental allowance is a flat €500.10 a month if you had materské for this child, €364.80 if you did not, until the child turns three.
Parental leave and annual leave
Maternity and parental leave are protected periods under the Labour Code; annual leave untaken because of them is carried over, and time on maternity leave counts towards the annual leave entitlement.
The annual leave entitlement itself is covered on our Slovakia annual leave page — 20 working days minimum.
Keeping the record straight
Long leaves are where leave records go wrong quietly: holiday that kept accruing for months and was never credited, a return date nobody diarised, a reduced entitlement applied where the law forbids it. In Slovakia the rules above decide what is owed on return, and the record has to show it. A tracker like Leavo keeps the leave, the accrual and the approvals in one place so the return is a date, not a dispute. We compare the options in our leave management software guide, and the policy side — carryover, payout, accrual — in our guides.
